Ahoy from HK!

Hullo all.

Just thought I'd make a quick post. Currently in HK now, enjoying the nice food and weather :D I'm staying at my uncle's, and we have wifi here, so I'll still be able to be in email communication / IM communcation [if my jetlag holds up...]. These next few days we're gonna take care of shopping (YAY!), and then we might visit the more rural/local parts of HK. Be nice for photoshooting, and also learning and experiencing a bit of the actual history of Hong Kong.

Maybe I'll post more later. Excited to see everyone again in less than a month! O.o

here's one to the sun!

two things-

i haven't seen the strawberry swing video (i do want some strawberries... but i can't have them! read on for details).

i also want some kind of drink with gin!!! (i saw a recipe on 'living' in line @ bj's... looked MAD good!)

-----

so why can't i have strawberries?

well...... this story goes back to thursday- i got my bottom two wisdom teeth pulled out (eek!).
i did the local, instead of having the gas, so i was awake the whole time, but my mouth was numb.
beyond the fact that the drilling dental device made a scary sound (my surgeon also said something along the lines of 'uh i think i can still get that one out' at one point), and my mouth was incredibly sore (believe me) from being open the whole entire time, it was actually bearable.

i stopped bleeding at about an hour after the surgery (pretty good i think)! i got prescribed more motrin (now i have a giant stock of them @ home... from my mishap earlier this year and this 'oral surgery'), vicodin, penicillin, and some kind of anti-flammatory pills with this incredibly long name that i don't remember how to spell... pretty sure it starts with methyl. that's about it.

i took two motrins on the first day, and have been pain pill free since! woohooo! i think this year i've taken enough pain killers for my entire life! let's hope i never need them again!!! but i probably will... when i get my two top ones out (eek).

right now, my diet has been consisting of congee, congee and more congee, with some soup here and there. today, i added white bread and mashed potato to the variety. wohoo for me!

so, i skipped two days of work, and one overnight volunteering, and missed out on some gorgeous food all over the past three days. it's sad. i'm hungry. i want real food!!

first time ever in my life that i'm craving some bbq sausage and meat. it's just a little bit bizzare to say the least. and i always really want eggplant and asparagus, but that's not weird at all.

i tried to eat a meatball yesterday, but it took me about 10 minutes to consume the whole thing. i had to chop it up into tiny pieces and then swallow it with the aid of soup. man oh man, i can bearly taste it! i miss the flavor of meat... oh how thou melt in my mouth!!!!

i've always been eating a lot of icecream and yogurt. who knew yoplait had boston creme pie flavor. needless to say, it was SWEET. too sweet for my taste. i ate on bottle over the interval of about 45 minutes. yuck. i'm so sick of sugar.

i've been waking up two to three times per night to use the bathroom. too much liquid intake :(

speaking of which, i think i'll end this post here so i can go and ... use the potty =\

peace + <3,
-Mofei.

p.s. i just remembered why i named this post what it is :) it's sunny outside! and have been for a good week! (except for that spot of rain thursday) :) BEACH WEATHER indeed!

p.s.s. HAPPY AUGGIE!

strawberry swing

Hey everyone, I apologize for my terrible skills in keeping in touch. Work has completely taken over my life... as of late I hadn't been getting home until 10:30 and I went to work the past two Saturdays :( I am freaking out because this Wednesday I have to do a 30 minute presentation to some of the teams in my department as well as a demo of my application to the people who are going to be using my program. The thing is, I don't know what I'm going to talk about for 30 minutes, nor have I finished implementing all the functionality that needs to be completed by Wednesday. Ahhhh!!

They asked me if I wanted to extend my internship by two weeks. The extra money would be awesome, but honestly I can't wait to get the heck out of there. I just want to relax!! According to my calculations, I wasted 210 hours this summer commuting :(

Oh, and volunteering...volunteering's been really fun. We've only had 6 kids during each class, which is really great because then I actually get the chance to talk to each of them. It's definitely something I look forward to during the week.

That basically sums up my life... oh, and I'm going to see Coldplay in exactly one week :D And if you haven't watched it yet, go watch the new Strawberry Swing video, it's absolutely brilliant!!

Time to start getting my things together for work and getting ready for bed. Yeah, it's only a little past 10:30... you guys should make sure I can continue these good habits during the school year :)

Sup homeboys

Hello, hello. Long time no post lol. Happy birthday to Julie :O

I've been keeping busy I guess since my last post. Went home on July 4 weekend and had some great time with family. We went to visit an Amish Village, then had some nice times at Hershey Park, land of chocolate :) It was a good weekend.

This past weekend was the first weekend in a while that I didn't see Penn Station lol. Spent it here in Boston. Had a pretty chill time. I FINALLY watched Transformers 2 with Jerry and Rich (can you believe it? I didn't watch it on the day it came out...). Good movie, although it was just like...everywhere. A bit hard to follow. But good movie nonetheless.

Sunday went shopping with Daniela, Lisa, Mofei, and Tim. I set out to buy a few shirts from United Colors of Benneton (70% off sale!!!! OMG.), but unfortunately they were closed by the time I got there. I got a pair of slim jeans from express though...hmm...they kinda make my butt look big :O Haven't worn them yet. Should be an interesting experience though O.o

ANYWAYs. Um...work has been pretty good. My advisor is out of the country giving a guest lecture for the week, so I'm left here in Boston to finish up some diagnostics tests and write my final paper. It's going along well. My last day here is around August 5th-ish, then I'll be heading to Hong Kong. Any souveniers in particular you guys want? :)

ALSO. Owl City is playing at Paradise Lounge (right out in West Campus). They have a new album out...here's a music video i think some of you might enjoy :) They're playing on Sept 18. Anyone wanna go? It's like $15 a ticket I think

anyway, this weekend I'm headed back to NJ. Helping out at my church's retreat, childcare and whatnot.

Have a splendid week :)

Nostalgiatopia

Haha, this song is on my currently playing. It's by EleventySeven, this band which apparently no one else but me likes :( I am going to force a youtube video onto you guys. *FORCE*

In any case. Life's been good on my end since my last post. Haven't really made anything new, hence the lack of food updates. I've still been cooking though, fear not; just nothing new / picture worthy. The highlight of my cooking 'career' was maybe about a week ago, when I helped out BCEC cook dinner for 13 people. I ended up cooking by myself - made the dishes I was most comfortable with: bulgogi, tomato+egg+beef, soy sauce chicken, and bok choy. It was a miracle that everything turned out right (actually, everything was the best I've ever made it before), and I didn't finish cooking it too early or too late. Everyone was well fed, and no leftovers, so just the right amount too. Overall, took me 4ish hours of actual cooking + prep work, once I had all my supplies. So guys, dinner parties next year? :P

Just this past weekend, me, Stan, and Rich went down to NY (yay NY! and NJ TOO! X_X). We stayed over at Susana's (thanks Susana!), and met up with Julie and then Martin in the city for a fun-filled blast of a day. I'll let you guys express your own opinions, but I had a blast :) It was really great seeing you guys again, and it just makes me miss you NYers all the more. We'll have another trip though soon, we must! I'll post up pics on FB soon, once I get home and load up my camera onto my computer.

I ended up taking a late bus back because I had to be back early to help clean up my room; I'm hosting some people from PESI, the organization I went with to Kyrgyzstan last year, since they're having their pre-trip orientation in Boston this year. So yeah, I took a midnight bus, which arrived at 3:30AMish Sunday at South Station. I wanted to stay in the city till church started (around 9:30), but then I realized that probably wasn't the safest option. So I went back to the apartment and slept till early noonish, lol.

It's funny though, throughout the bus ride back and most of that day, I think God really moved in me; I've been feeling a bit moody these past few days (proof that I am a girl??), and I honestly felt kinda spiritually dead. It's a really sucky feeling. In any case, I was just chilling in a CFA piano room (CFA is maaad baller now yos!) that day, just waiting for the PESI people to arrive at the airport later, when I felt really moved to pray (sidenote: I have a confession to make. I don't pray for my friends a lot; nor do I pray out loud when I'm by myself. I think this was my first time in a while doing either, let alone both...) I think I was praying to the point of tears that God would help me find some refreshment anew in the gospels, and more or less provide some revitalization to my faith.

So then I was in BN today before meeting up with Stan, and I was looking for a book, when I noticed this book, "3:16 - The Numbers of Hope", by Max Lucado. Obviously I'm naturally drawn to numbers lol. But the book seems to provide a pretty interesting take on a verse that draws the entirety of the Bible to a high climax and main idea. It expounds upon the far reaching implications of John 3:16, and really brings fresh, perhaps not new, but definitely revitalizing perspective into the picture. Yet the verse itself is what holds power, not commentary. To take Lucado's words, it is "[b]rief enough to write on a napkin or memorize in a moment, yet solid enough to weather two thousand years of storms and questions". For sake of brevity, link to the verse is here. I just felt like, wow, God really did answer my prayer. So yeah, that's currently the book I'm going through right now, along with the other book I had intended originally to pick up.

I had lunch with Stan today and his parents. I will miss you Stan :( but I'll see you soon in September. Thanks for being my first ever asian roommate and giving me an awesome summer so far :)

Currently sitting in the science/engineering library, working at my research project. I'm like halfway through with the UROP program now (halfway done! oh my!). This week me and my advisor/boss are gonna start planning out the final paper for this project. I've made a lot of headway on this, a lot more progress than I had figured. It's given me an opportunity to learn a lot of stuff. And I'm getting paid too :D :D :D

Aaaand that is all. Check FB for pics!

the good samaritans

its 2:20 am

its been exactly 3 hours and 20 minutes since ive gotten here. ive picked up the phone 11 times and had actual conversations 9 times out of 11. one hang up. wonder who that was. maybe they just weren't ready to talk about stuff with me.

im hungry and im contemplating playing some games to pass time before the phone rings again. or maybe ill read my textbook and keep psychology fresh in my brain.

i really like this! but the people here all think im crazy to do all overnight shifts this summer. well, i gotta get my 9 in before summer ends! i can't do them over the fall. no way no how. i just hope there are other people here when im doing my shifts =\ i don't like to be here alone. it would be rather scary and sad.... :(

i wish you guys were awake to keep me company. i mean we don't have to talk, but just seeing people on my aim buddy list makes me slightly more comfortable. i guess it's all about not feeling alone. i guess that's why these people call our hotline- to not feel alone. and i guess if im talking to them, we are both working off of each other, and we both don't feel alone- and we both feel needed! like one of our callers said- people need people. (he's my favorite caller so far!)

and it feels SO absolutely wonderful when these callers thank me and stuff. it makes me feel like my efforts aren't a waste!

the good Samaritans of the world, i salute you!

<3 + peace,
-Mofei.

disclaimer: the post is really really long SORRY

yowsers! i havent talked to some of you all summer :( i will try to stay more updated with this blog but CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S JUNE!?

haha well since i got back to ny it has been lovely. the beautiful bushes in front of my home were in full bloom when i got back (sorry no pics because they're dead already >.<) and the peach trees in the front are sprouting small hard green peaches that are definitely inedible but smell amazing! but on the home front a major update, I GOT TWO KITTENS! i named them tobey and maggie because when we first got them the gray one was trying to jump out of every enclosure we put it inside of and it reminded me of spiderman-> tobey maguire so i named him tobey and i named the other kitten maggie because for some reason tobey maguire made me think of maggie gyllenhaal and she/he was a quiet kitty so it went along with what i thought of maggie gyllenhaal. but it has turned out now that maggie is indeed a ferocious boy kitty who enjoys biting his sister tobey but the names have stuck in my head so their names are such. my parents dislike the names but they call them that anyways haha

tobey (gray kitty) & maggie (tan kitty) YES THEY HAVE GORGEOUS EYES and they are infinitely adorable

err other than the two kittys, ive been helping my brother with school he has a few more weeks left and he wasn't doing so hot :T but things are going okay. im taking an 8am stats class buhahahahahah and wake up at 6:15 buhahahahaha which is even earlier than i did during the school year. im tutoring at my old job which pays well so it makes me happy particularly because i dont have to work that many hours so i can volunteer at my hospital again (mb maternity this summer?) and i can take that stats class.

ive met up with lots of old friends, watched star trek IMAX (ZOMG truly amazing and stunning... though i felt pretty stupid when i went in with my friend i was like hey, dude where are the 3D glasses and he just looked at me and was like.... when was the last time you came to an imax theater? err mb 9, 10 years ago... friend *blinked* ahahahahaa) but then i watched UP! 3D (again amazing! especially in 3D! the commercials were even in 3D!! and i went on a friday afternoon so i got to laugh with little kids which felt great! and it made me so happy!) i also saw taylor swift at her today show concert ahhahaha met up with lisa at 5:30 am and we OMG saw taylor swift!! we stood in the pouring rain for a few hours because we were in the middle and if you open an umbrella the people behind you can't see so we were nice and stood in the pouring rain. really realllyyyy COOL!

taylor swift wearing a really cool shiny blue racerback tank dress with brown boots. note: there were hundreds of screaming fans-- young 2 year olds to grown women older than my mom and yes there were boys and men there as well

lisa, soaking wet but ecstatic because she gets to experience taylor swift in person!

she's beautiful and looks just like her album cover. seriously there is probably no or hardly any photoshopping with her pics, she looks exactly the same. my only regret is that we didnt get that close to her we were still maybe ~10 feet away from her? and the people who were close to her got autographs so that would have been great but meh it was still amazing! we were really really close to al roker and matt lauer though! mb like 2 feet away! they also look really good ahahha and of course it was lovely seeing lisa! we of course went shopping after! great because it was so early in the morn so all the stuff was still neat and in order. but bad because i forgot to bring my cell phone so we got a little lost when we went to macys. :X but i mean come on in what other city can you see taylor swift in concert and then walk down a few blocks on fifth ave, past the library and grand central to arrive at herald square? ZOMG NY <3

last friday was my brother's bday and it was great. regrettably, he decided not to invite his friends over for a party so i was unable to scout them out. the cake was really delish though and i made bubble tea! too bad i didnt have those straws :(

i also made breakfast for my family last weekend i think. i made some peanut butter banana french toast and some scrambled eggs. no not together! i know peanut butter banana french toast sounds gross but it's pretty good :)

currently im still sort of ish looking for a job. if i get one, great if not then oh well. i spent the last few days thinking about what i want to do and reflecting on my life. i have a lot of thinking to do about med school and i sort of thought about doing marketing? i had a long heart to heart with my parents the last two nights and surprisingly my parents are really really supportive. im not sure what im going to do yet, particularly because i still really really love science and medicine and hospitals and high levels of stress (haha) but it's something i have to think about.

this post is way too long i sincerely apologize and if i kicked anyone's post off please note that susana posted before me, and mofei before her and josiah before her? so please read their posts! im sorry for writing an obnoxiously long message. ill try to update a little more frequently so it can be much shorter. i miss you all! i thinking about visiting boston some weekend soon?

workworkwork

I've been busier than I think I've ever been these days... but in a good way, for the most part :) On Saturday I went to Chinatown to interview for a volunteer job. If I get it, I'll be helping high school kids with the college application process and occasionally run classes on such topics. Saturday night i went to the mall with my friend... and can I just say that it is ridiculously hard to find a good pair of black patent heels, which you'd think would be really easy to find because they're so common, but apparently not. And then Sunday I went to the beach all day :)

Just a note before I begin talking about work: I am not allowed to identify myself online as an employee of the company I work for, so I shall henceforth refer to it as The Company. (You guys shouldn't name The Company for any reason either.) Apparently there was one incident where a negative article was posted on nytimes.com about The Company, and an employee wrote a comment on the article defending The Company, but subsequently got in trouble with InfoSec (Information Security). Seriously, they have a team of people just searching for this stuff and making sure employees never post anything, good or bad, about The Company unless they have authorization. Crazy!!

Last Thursday and Friday I had orientation at the Jersey office. Orientation mostly consisted of a bunch of speakers from The Company talking to us about the firm, their business principles, etc. Friday afternoon I met up with my buddy (every intern gets assigned somebody who joined the firm fairly recently and has been through the internship process), who is super nice and cool; she's from Hawaii :) She introduced me to most of the people on our team, and they all seem nice. I feel really bad when I talk to this one guy who is really nice and willing to help but for the life of me I can't understand what he's saying sometimes because of his accent. And it turns out that one of my managers is my mom's friend, as in somebody I've been on vacations with...so having to report to her is going to be really weird.

I was also shown to my cubicle on Friday. It's not a typical cubicle though; the partitions are very low so that you can see and talk to everyone around you. I have dual monitors, but unfortunately the main one is damaged in one part so there's a permanent black spot on it :\ Feel free to email me at my work address because I'm not allowed to access personal accounts at work -- my username is the same as my gmail username and for the domain, put the two initials of The Company and then .com. Don't send me emails with any sort of content that could be remotely construed as inappropriate because InfoSec will come for me!

Today I had training for the database and programming language I'm going to be working with this summer. It's gross, I don't like it :( The editor is all text-based and looks like DOS with more colors; it literally looks like something from the 80s, which I was not expecting from a firm that, in their own words, uses "cutting-edge technology." And they basically invented their own programming language, which I'm having a hard time getting used to. I so envy those other interns that get to use Java and C/C++...! I really wish I got to use one of these languages because then I could at least apply whatever new skills I acquire at school and at other jobs, but since this language is proprietary this knowledge will be totally useless everywhere else :\

The best part so far has been meeting some of the other interns. Everyone around me blows my mind. I met somebody who wrote an operating system, somebody who wants to hike up Wachusett Mountain (seriously), somebody who wrote a program to simulate a Turing machine, somebody from Zimbabwe. The geek in me felt so at home when somebody asked me what my preferred operating system is XD Unfortunately I won't get to work with any of the other interns as I'm the only intern in my group :(

The stupid Company won't pay me until the last day of this month, which means I'm going to run out of money again. Monthly LIRR ticket + monthly MetroCard + work clothes = broke!

Yay I'm getting an office!

So I was talking to my advisor yesterday, and basically, he now has an office I might be able to use during my time here. Granted, it's a temporary office, but it'll mean no more working out of 111 Cummington / GSU. While I really enjoy the amount of freedom I get from this UROP job, I really feel like I get distracted easily and end up not getting stuff done (like right now) x.x

Food post coming up in a bit. Handi's coming over tonight for dinner, so I'll post afterwards.

things i was going to do but never got to... or ... just .. yeah

wow that sure is one long blog title! but hey, im not complaining, so you shouldn't either :)

my new job is really chill. i basically sit around and do nothing. last friday i faxed something, horray! other than that i run some errands every now and then, or do some copy machine tinkering. pretty much it. hey, im not gonna argue for more work 'cuz im ba-da-ba-da-da lovin' it :)

there's one problem though- my constant boredom leads me to two sites: nytimes.com OR the ever so awesome sims 3 website. ive been patiently anticipating for the release (june 2nd) since um... a while ago. im so W$tueofdijlknm203 excited!!!

okay, before i bore everyone to death about that game (which is freaking awesome; i think everyone should own a copy and play to their hearts content. or you guys can listen to ME tell you stories about them to MY hearts content. whichever suits you suits me fine, thank you!). so oh, i finally got a new ipod. horray! and for a good price tooooooo. so far so good.

i made a batch of cookies the other day, and kind of devoured a lot of them before they made it over to josiah & stan's pad. fortunately there were some crumbs left over for them :)

i think i might try my hand at cooking this friday. hopefully there are some food in the fridge for some mofei creations. or maybe i should tell my mum which food to leave me now....

on that note,
peace + <3

Food update...

Hello, and happy birthday to Susana :O

Anyway, sorry haven't posted in a bit. Went home for the weekend - was nice spending time with the family. We barbequeued - twice. The second time, we had guests over. Both times though, we ate inside, so it didn't feel like a barbequeue. My dad did all the grilling - my mom was sick, and us kids were feeling lazy =/

In any case, here's the promised food/cooking pics since last time...read up on my blog for detailed descriptions :)

and as a bonus...a cheesecake, made by my awesome sister :) I made the crust though.

Toodles, lovelies.

twenty

I'm twenty! I don't like it. It did, however, result in me getting to eat many desserts, so maybe it was a good thing after all. I had three cakes last night. All at once. I think that's basically the definition of AWESOME.

Coldplay just announced that they're playing on LONG ISLAND in July! Except I don't think I can go because I don't think I can make it back from work on time for it... if only they were playing in the city... :'( But at least I have the Keane concert tomorrow thanks to Josiah :D

Have a good last week of May!

Beef and Green Peace!

This time tried to make beef and string beans. First time it was really all on my own. I think I was a bit rushed though. I tried using the method Elliot showed me to defrost the meat, by microwaving it for 30 seconds on both sides - I ended up accidentally cooking it. Then for the marination, I used a bit too much soy sauce, so the meat came out too salty. The sauce was some chinese oyster sauce, sugar, salt, pepper (couldn’t really taste any though), and sugar.

The cooking part itself wasn’t too hard. To make sure the beans weren’t too overdone, I actually cooked 60%ish before adding them to the mix of beef and sauce. Overall, not too shabby for my first time all alone.

Voila.

what's up homeslices!

iiii simply love the fact that nobody else is posting anything =\

alright. time to go get oj. im sick.

mofei out. peace + <3.

Work...

So I talked to my boss/advisor/professor today, and basically, I'm allowed to work whenever/wherever, as long as I get work done and meet milestones. I have to meet with him for an hour every other day, which is no biggie. Being my own boss and getting paid for it rocks.

The end.

commencement weekend splasher

/\ that was me this weekend. except the weather was HOT on friday, cold on saturday, and FREEZING on sunday (and the smg sprinkler today did not help the rainy weather, and my small bladder =\)

in any case. it was a good experience in general (besides the fact that i definitely caught a cold, and my throat is scratchy, my nose is not-quite-stuffy-but-almost-there-stuffy). saw lots of interesting ppl. some southern belles, some cali hollywood beverly hills moms, and also some average joes. you take your pick.

oooo british ppl too! bloody awesome!

man, ppl these days and their freaking heels though... three inches, 3.5 inches, and above... although there was this one girl who was complaining on comm ave while all she had on was like 0.5 inch... makes you wonder, no?

also some ppl made interesting remarks about the info booth such as:
[imagine valley girl accent]
"hmm they have info booths here? interesting... i guess its kinda cool"

wish they wouldn't say that right infront of the booth.

some dude asked me for the price of pot.
another dude flipped through my Book of Vice: Very Naughty Things (and how to do them) looking for pictures... and then commented "no pictures? guess it's not very naughty then huh!"
well sir, if i was reading such "naughty" books, quite frankly, i would not read them in public!

alright. enough of that.
mofei out. peace + <3.

Bulgogi yummy

[cp/pasted from my blog...too lazy to rewrite...]

Attempt number 2 at cooking - Elliot taught me how to make Bulgogi. Apparently it’s pronounced ‘purlh-gol-gi’ I think, if I were to phonetically write it out.
In any case, first we made the sauce to marinate the beef in. The beef should be thinly sliced (according to Shaws, it’s ‘Shaved Beef’). The sauce we made consisted of…sesame oil, soy sauce, sesame seeds, sugar, canned peach juice, salt, pepper, garlic powder, garlic, paprika, cumen, ginger powder. Everything was made according to taste (note to self: cooking is a VERY creative process). Basically, we wanted to end up with a sesame oil -ish  taste, not too salty. We then placed the sauce into a plastic bag, put the strips of beef in, and added some mushrooms and onions in, and let it sit in the freezer for half an hour. Took it out, cooked it, add some rice and lettuce, and voila.

Hope everyone is doing well! :)

Food attempt number one.

Hello people.

So, Stan and I are basically moved into the apartment. We and Tiff/Dani went down to NJ for a day to help return my car, then toured around NYC till the 1PM bus we caught.

Elliot taught me and Stan some basics of cooking, and this is what we came up with.

Dry-marinated with a mixture of salt, pepper, paprika, sesame seeds, and some other spices. Seared in sesame oil (smelled pretty good).

Nothing fancy, good stuff.

That is all.
